"Save Wimbledon Speedway Campaign"

In response to the many calls we have received from people wanting
to try and help the club survive next season here is what can be
done to help raise funds for either a track share or for providing a
new home for the club if we can find one.

1). Make out a cheque payable to Wimbledon Speedway plc.
2). Enclose a stamped addressed envelope, so that if necessary the
cheque can be returned to you.
3). Enclose with the cheque a short statement (which you should sign
and date) as follows:-

"Please find enclosed a cheque for £???? This is a donation to
Wimbledon Speedway plc to help with the costs associated with either
arranging a track share in 2006 with another speedway club, or
providing a new purpose built track and stadium for Wimbledon
Speedway. The donation cannot be used for any other purpose and
must be returned if either of these events do not take place."

4). The cheques will only be cashed if Wimbledon Speedway plc can
firm up an agreement for next season, so if you send a cheque do not
expect to see the money leave your bank account for several months.

5). Address your cheques to "Save Wimbledon Speedway Campaign" 21
Malden Green Avenue, Worcester Park, Surrey, KT4 7SG.

6). We will place in the Speedway Star and local press details of
our campaign and will keep everyone appraised of how much we raise
on this discussion group and in the local media.

Lets hope that by all working together we can save the club and we
will list all donations in next seasons programme if we are
successful. Two hundred fans prepared to pay £100 each would I
think raise enough to secure the club for next season.

Wimbledon Speedway Launch New Community Initiative

The Directors of Wimbledon Speedway plc have decided as a thank you to Judy Saunders the Mayor of the London Borough of Merton, for her support in the campaign to help keep speedway racing at Wimbledon Stadium, to make a unique offer to the local community.  If the campaign to retain speedway racing at Wimbledon is successful and we reach agreement with the GRA our landlords we will offer free admission to every pupil attending a Merton School together with their parents so that they can attend every speedway meeting for the whole of next season without charge.

The directors of Wimbledon Speedway plc Perry Atwood, Dingle Brown and Ian Perkin believe that this is a unique offer that has never before been made by a professional sports company in the United Kingdom.  Anti-social behaviour amongst the young is a big problem in South London and the aim of this initiative is to get closer to the local community and make direct contact with parents and their children and give them the opportunity at no cost to get involved with a challenging and adventurous environment that they will enjoy and which will give them the chance to interact with other youngsters that have constructively directed their energy into the world’s most exciting “live” sport rather than ending up being involved in anti-social behaviour.

If the club continues to race in season 2006 the involvement of local youngsters will not purely be as a passive spectators.  In addition to taking the highly distinctive Wimbledon Speedway road show to individual Merton Schools and youth organisations, Wimbledon Speedway plc will make an application to the Lottery Commission for a grant and seek local commercial sponsorship so that a pool of equipment can be maintained for the exclusive use of local young people who would otherwise be unable to raise the necessary finance to allow them to race.  Under the supervision of our training instructors these youngsters will be able to take to the track themselves and experience at first hand the “high octane” thrills that can only be experienced when you ride a 500cc brakeless speedway bike and which put the false thrills generated by anti-social behaviour clearly in the shade.  The Merton scheme is intended to be the first step in a wider engagement that we hope to establish with the whole of the South London Community and it is the intention of Wimbledon Speedway plc to offer in future seasons the same offer to schools in other London Boroughs until we have covered the whole of the South London Area.

NO BRAKES, NO FEAR, NO MERCY, IT HAS TO BE WIMBLEDON SPEEDWAY!!!!!!

SAVE THE DONS FROM THE PAWS OF THE GRA
The following list are ways in which you can help save Wimbledon Speedway from closure.
The Mayor of Merton has made a strong
press statement in our support and one thing everyone could do is e-
mail the Minister of Sport Richard Caborn at
richard.caborn@culture.gsi.gov.uk
or write to him care of the House of Commons asking him to step in and
help save London's only speedway.
The Wimbledon Speedway Supporters Club have setup a petition to try and stop us closing down. If anyone would like a copy of the petition so they can get friends, family or work colleagues to sign it please email me on emmacla@yahoo.co.uk and I will email a copy back to you.
There will be some volunteers outside the turnstiles tonight asking you to sign the petition as you come in, there will also be a copy with Kim and Julie on the Supporters Club desk in the main entrance and with us in the downstairs bar after the meeting. I will also ask Lorna if I can leave a copy with her at the track shop.
If you are unable to get to Plough Lane and would like to be added to the petition please email me on the above email address with your name, address and a line just confirming you would like to be added to the petition. This is just precaution as I don’t want to be accused of adding names to the list!
Thanks

PRESS RELEASE 19th SEPTEMBER 2005

WIMBLEDON SPEEDWAY SET TO CLOSE
The Directors of Wimbledon Speedway plc regret to announce that the GRA, the landlords at Wimbledon Stadium, have informed us that we will be unable to run speedway events at Plough Lane beyond the end of the current campaign that finishes in October 2005.

Last Wednesday at a meeting with the management of Wimbledon Stadium, the Directors of Wimbledon Speedway plc put forward an offer to renew the rental agreement for the 2006 season at a value in real term terms identical with the one in existence for the current year.

The GRA informed the Directors of Wimbledon Speedway plc that this offer would not be acceptable, and that unless the rental payment was substantially increased, speedway racing would cease at the stadium at the conclusion of the 2005 season.

The rent that Wimbledon Speedway plc currently pay for the use of Wimbledon Stadium is the highest paid by any speedway promotion in the United Kingdom and was subject this season to an increase in excess of 25%. In addition Wimbledon Speedway plc pay costs to cover the expense of laying protected sheets on the greyhound track and to sweep the arena after speedway events.

The Directors of Wimbledon Speedway plc do not believe that speedway racing can remain economically viable if faced with a substantial rent increase for the second year in succession.

Therefore reluctantly we must announce that speedway racing will cease at Plough Lane after the completion of the league fixtures against Oxford on the 21st September, Stoke on the 28th September and the Laurels individual championship on October 5th.

Representations have been made to Clive Feltham, Chairman of the GRA, and also to Luke Johnson and Ben Redmond of Risk Capital Partners, owners of the GRA, in the hope that speedway may continue, but to date, no response has been forthcoming.

It is disappointing that after investing £50,000 in building a purpose built speedway circuit, and at the point where we are about to conclude our most successful season yet, both in terms of finances and on track performances, the GRA have decided to end speedway events at their stadium.

Our focus must now be aimed at supporting the Robert Heath Heating Dons in their endeavours to bring back the first league championship to Plough Lane since 1961 and we can only hope that the GRA have a change of heart and recognise the economic and social benefits of having speedway staged at their stadium.

Robert Heath Heating Dons Sign Grant MacDonald

Dingle Brown team manager of the Robert Heath Heating Dons this
morning was pleased to announce that Workington Speedway asset Grant
MacDonald will be joining the Wimbledon team for the rest of the
season. "Grant has tried out at a number of tracks recently to see
where he would best like to make his return to the sport after being
put out of speedway through serious injury. On Wednesday he rode
for the first time at Plough Lane and declared, after recording the
fastest time of the night in his opening heat, that the Wimbledon
track suited his style of riding and that it was the Robert Heath
Heating Dons he wanted to sign for. Although terms were agreed with
the rider on Wednesday evening an announcement could not be made
until this morning as Grant is a Workington asset and permission
had to be obtained from Graham Drury the Workington boss before
Grant could officially join the team. Having this morning been
knocked off the top of the Conference League table by Oxford, I
believe that Grant's signing gives us the additional fire power that
we have lacked at times away from home this season and will enable
us to put a good fight to take the league championship, particularly
as with home and away fixtures to come with Oxford and Weymouth the
destiny of the title could be said to rest in our own hands.
Unfortunately, because Grant is a ten point grade rider under the
current rules we cannot fit him in to the team without dropping
James Clement from the squad to ensure that our team strength is
still within the required points limit. James therefore has agreed
to go to Weymouth and I understand that Brian White hopes to secure
a deal with the rider tonight We wish James every success with his
new club, although we still consider him part of the Plough Lane
family and he may well figure in our plans for next season.
Similarly Peter Collyer cannot be fitted back into the squad
notwithstanding his excellent performance on Wednesday night, again
Peter remains very much part of the Plough Lane family and is likely
to go on loan to Sittingbourne for the rest of the season. Grant
MacDonald rides for us at Boston on Sunday and the team just can't
wait to get into action against Malcolm Vasey's team".

Wimbledon Commemorates 75 years Of International Speedway

With the cricketing Ashes very much to the fore at the present time, it's fitting that the 75th anniversary of the first speedway Test Match ever ridden, between England and Australia, is commemorated next Wednesday (17th August) at Plough Lane, scene of the very first meeting back in 1930.

The Wimbledon management have pulled out the stops to book in 14 top Conference League riders to race in a much anticipated Lions v Rest of the World International Challenge.

Robert Heath Heating Dons Chairman Ian Perkin commented " We feel that the 75th anniversary of Test Matches in our fine sport should not pass by unnoticed. Therefore, with some very generous sponsorship from a number of parties, we are in a position to announce an extra special meeting in the form of a Lions versus Rest of the World meeting that will contain some of the finest personalities in the Conference League."

It is expected that the Lions septet will be contain a number of Wimbledon riders, with Mark Burrows already confirmed as skipper of the Lions, whilst Aussie hero Scott James leads the Rest of the World side.

MacDonald Shines On Plough Lane Debut

Cumbrian Grant MacDonald capped an impressive first visit to SW17 with a fine ten point score as his quartet, Scott;s Speedsters claimed victory in last Wednesday's highly entertaining Summer Fours tournament. With the recalled Peter Collyer also making a fine comeback with a nine point return, it left Dons manager Dingle Brown in the enviable position of having a  degree of scope in strengthening the Wimbledon line up for the rest of the campaign.

Consequently, Grant MacDonald has been handed the opportunity to get his career back on track with the Dons, whilst James Clement and Peter Collyer have made loan moves to Weymouth and Sittingbourne respectively.

The restructured Wimbledon septet lost 55-42 against a strong Boston side on Sunday evening, but will be confident of earning the valuable bonus point when the Barracuda-Braves make the return journey later this year.

Buxton Hitmen are the visitors to Plough Lane this Wednesday, with the Dons eager to secure another vital two league points on offer.

All the way through this meeting it was difficult to say which team was going to win. Mildenhall still had the hope that if they won this meeting they still had a small chance of progressing through to the semi final stage of the conference trophy.

Jon Armstrong gave the fen tigers a very good start by storming away ahead of Scott James and James Clement in heat 1 in a very quick time of 63.3. This was followed up by returnee to Plough Lane Andrew Bargh and his reserve partner James Purchase in a 5-1 over the RHH Dons reserve duo of Lee Strudwick and newcomer Rob Smith.

In heat 3 Danny Betson who has had to move up into the team (due to conference league rules!!!) shot out of the gates along with Mark Thompson and it looked like the Don was going to go ahead of the tiger, however Danny had to settle for second place when Mark Thompson was able to pull away. This race gave the second 3-3 of the evening.

The following 5 heat were all shared with 4 of the heat wins going to the RHH Dons but with the fen tigers packing in 2nd and 3rd to share the points. Heat 5 saw the Dons duo of Matt Wright and Danny Betson come 2nd and 3rd behind Jon Armstrong. At the end of heat 8 the scores were Wimbledon 22 Mildenhall 26.

It was then in heat 9 when the RHH Dons started to put  more pressure on the fen tigers as the pairing of Danny Betson and Matt Wright scored a fantastic 4-2 over Chris Johnson and Andrew Bargh. This was then followed up by a 5-1 win by Scott James and James Clement over Mark Thompson and Scott Campos.

Therefore going into the interval the RHH Dons were leading 31-29

After the interval the Fen tigers hit back at the Dons with a 4-2 with a fantastic race between the Master of Plough Lane Buzz Burrows and a favourite of Plough Lane  Jon Armstrong. This race saw Armstrong get the gate over Burrows, they both rode a fantastic race well worth the admission price alone, it saw Burrows using all the track in attempts to catch Armstrong, Armstrong rode a tremendous last bend to just beat Burrows on the line, and with Trevor Heath beating Lee Strudwick the Fen Tigers levelled the scores to 33 a piece.

Heat 12 saw Matt Wright storm ahead of Mark Thompson and Andrew Bargh to keep the scores level.

Once again in heat 13 we saw Jon Armstrong and Buzz Burrows line up with Scott James and Chris Johnson, this time Buzz got the better of Armstrong and with James getting the better of Johnson, the RHH Dons were once again in front by 2 points.

Heat 15 and Danny Betson was riding back with his old reserve partner Lee Strudwick, and what a match winning race it was as both RHH Dons hit the front to record a 5-1 (something which they were use to doing in heat 2!!!!)

There was an anti climax to heat 15 as most of the crowd were expecting another race between Buzz Burrows and Jon Armstrong, however that was not to be as the fen Tigers manager decided that he was going to put out Trevor Heath and Scott Campos, therefore with a 5-1 win for the Duo of Burrows and Scott James over Heath and Campos the final score was 50 to the Dons and 40 to the Tigers. Meaning that Boston and Weymouth will now progress through to the semi finals on the conference trophy.

WIMBLEDON RRH DONS 50 V MILDENHALL FEN TIGERS 46

What a meeting for the Robert Heath Heating Dons, having already won the 1st leg up at Mildenhall earlier in the season the bonus point was also up for grabs. With Mildenhall's team looking a bit on the weak side the fen tigers put on a very good performance against a very strong looking Wimbledon Dons side. The fen tigers came into this meeting riding rider replacement for Aidan Collins, and also without Adam Roynon. The only change in the Robert Heath Heating Dons side was the inclusion of Lee Strudwick who has come into the team since last weeks meeting due to the departure of Andrew Bargh.

Although the Wimbledon Robert Heath Heating Dons did look the stronger of the two teams they didn't get it all their own way when  in heat 1 Jon Armstrong shot from the tapes and produced a fantastic start and lead for the whole 4 laps to take the flag at the end of the race. Wimbledon were able to take the lead when inform Danny Betson teamed up with Lee Strudwick to produce the Dons first 5-1 of the evening. The following 5 heats were shared with Mildenhall taking 3 out of the 5 as heat win and Wimbledon taking 2 heat wins. Heat 4 being Danny Beston after Buzz Burrows retired after snapping a chain, and then in heat 7 when Mark Buzz Burrows got a heat win ahead of Lee Smart and Mark Thompson.

Heat 8 saw the Robert Heath Heating Dons go further into the lead when the ever improving Danny Betson and James Clement pulled off another 5-1 against last years Second half rider Trevor Heath and James Purchase. Heat 8 Jon Armstrong pulled of a great win for the Fen tigers being brought in for a rider Replacement ride for Adian Collins. Scott James pulled off a fantastic win over Lee Smart in heat 9 and with James Clement holding Mark Thompson at bay the Dons extended their lead once again.

Heat 11 saw one fantastic race at Plough Lane when Wimbledon's Team manger Dingle Brown put Danny Betson in for a reserve ride for Lee Strudwick and Mildenhall's Team Manager Wayne Swales brought in Jon Armstrong in for a Tactical ride. The heat was mounting when Danny Betson got one fantastic gate ahead of Armstrong and Burrows, Trevor Heath fell on the first bend. Betson managed to hold the lead infront of Armstrong for 2 laps, however unfortunatley he drifted wide and fell thus allowing Armstrong to take the win. Danny remounted his bike and finished the race with 1 point. Heat 12 saw James purchase take a reserve ride for Scott Campos of the tigers and sharing the points with Lee Smart taking a win over Danny Betson and Matt Wright. Heat 13 saw a fantastic race once again between Jon Armstrong and Mark Buzz Burrows with Burrows taking the win and Armstrong coming in 2nd ahead of Scott James. Heat 14 and Mildenhall put Lee Smart out for a tacticle Substitute ride starting 15mts back and with Lee Strudwick falling Peter Collyer had a fight on his hand, unfortunatley for the RRH Dons Milenhall came out 8 points better off and brought the score up to 46 to the Dons and 44 to the Fen Tigers. With only 2 points in it going into the last race, it was going to be hard work by all 4 riders out in heat 15. With Burrows and Betson for the Dons and Armstrong and Smart for the Fen Tigers, it was certainly going to be a race, and what a race it was well worth the admission price alone. Danny Butson made a terrific start for the Dons only for Lee Smart to fall and to be excluded. In the re run Buzz made the gate with Jon Armstrong and with Danny tucking in well behind them it made for an interesting race. Armstrong lead the race untell right on the line Mark Buzz Burrows did one of his famous moves off final bend and nipped the race win on the line. This was a very entertaining meeting and it was very difficult to decide who was the man of the match for me.

NEWS FLASH

Wimbledon Robert Heath Heating Dons took to the track at Sittingbourne to take on the Crusaders in a Conference League fixture. A Great crowd of Wimbledon Supporters made the trip to see the Dons pull of a great Victory. This meeting saw old Plough Lane favourites take to the track against the current Wimbledon Team. It was fantastic to see Chris Hunt, Andre Cross and Mark Baseby now crusaders once again. Andre came back into the sittingbourne team on sunday after having a week or two on the sideline with some very bad bruising to himself and bike damage after a crash at Oxford earlier in the month. Andre was put in the very hard position of riding at number 1 due to Sittingbourne currently losing the services of David McAllen. However Andre did well and managed to score a creditable 3 points. It was very nice to see the Wimbledon Crowd cheering Chris, Andre and Mark on in a match that was really only going one way. Sittingbourne put up a really good fight and Jordan Frampton and Shane Colvin really gave the Dons some challenges.
It was a very pleasent day out at Sittingbourne Speedway and I for one will hopefully be vitising there again during the season.

Although Andre is currently riding for the crusaders I would like to announce that Andre Cross's Racing Team Fan Club is STILL running, thank to Shannon we well be able to continue.
